John Fry assembled a garage studio when he was in junior high school and recorded garage bands. At that time his partner was Fred Smith (Future Owner of Fed-Ex) They then moved into this rented store building at 1457 National where they were from 1966 to November of 1971. This is where Fry got his big break and that break was Stax Records. Jim Stewart and Stax were starting to really expand and needed more recording studio space as the Stax studio on McLemore was being used constantly. This location became an auxiliary studio as such for Stax Records doing a lot of recording and remixing. Eddie Floyd's tribute to Otis Redding "Big Bird" was recorded here. Most of Isaac Hayes's Enterprise recordings were also done here including his "Hot Buttered Soul". Alex Chilton and "Big Star" recorded here and took the name "Big Star" while taking a break from recording and observing the name on a grocery store across the street.
